The parks were popular entertainment areas before the advent of television and shopping malls. Playlist: Parks

Singapore’s fame as a garden city was not achieved overnight. Beginning with the launch of the “Garden City” vision in the late 1960s, efforts to green the environment was sustained over the decades, involving large-scale tree-planting as well as the creation of parks all around the island. Today, there are some 400 parks in Singapore that not only offer residents places for recreation and respite from the bustle of city life, but some have also become popular tourist attractions due to their rich heritage, biodiversity, and beauty.

Playlist: Amusement and Theme Parks

A place where nightmares are made for little children, Haw Par Villa was built in 1937. It was one of a kind large garden filled with more than 1000 sculptures and dioramas depicting a wealth of Chinese culture, history, philosophy and religion. Though built decades ago, it was characterised by leisure and entertainment facilities that revolve a common theme or subject like most modern theme parks today.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the amusement and theme park industry in Singapore witnessed a growth due to the success of Disneyland in the post-war years, coupled with rising affluence in our post-independence years.

Amusement Parks

New World Park (1923-1987), Great World Amusement Park (1931-1964), and Gay World (Happy World) (1937-2000) were the three amusement parks built in Singapore before World War II. The parks were popular entertainment areas before the advent of television and shopping malls. They featured the cabaret, opera halls, movies, gaming, sports matches, stunts, and shopping.

After the 1960s, many of these amusement parks declined due to competing alternative entertainment options such as radios, televisions, shopping centres, discos, and nightclubs.

Did you know... Getai (歌台), which literally means “song stage” in Chinese, is a popular form of entertainment believed to have originated during the Japanese Occupation at the New World Amusement Park. The first getai is believed to be Da Ye Hui (大夜会).

Getai by Jaime Koh and Stephanie Ho

Getai is a popular form of mass entertainment that is believed to have originated during the Japanese Occupation and flourished in the 1950s. Amusement park based Getai went into a decline in the 1960s and 1970s after the introduction of the television. Today Getai is mainly staged during the Hungry Ghost Festival to entertain both the living and the dead.

This 2-volume thesis studies the three “Worlds” entertainment parks. Tan argued that the parks were sites of mass consumption that “transgressed entrenched class and ethnic boundaries of the colonial public sphere.” Volume I has nine chapters while Volume II consists of illustrations such as figures, maps, and building plans.

Animal Attractions

The animal attractions in Singapore are continuously evolving, providing experiential learning with leisure activities for the public. These parks enable people to have meaningful encounters with animals and nature, contained within a safe environment for all. While the takeaway from visiting these places may vary among individuals, the aim is for us to gain a deeper understanding of flora and fauna, and the environment through the varied sights and sounds.

                                   

Did you know... Did you know... Our island is home to more than 1,000 species of birds, animals and marine life? Singapore has five animal-themed parks namely, the SEA Aquarium, River Wonders Singapore, Bird Paradise (opening during the third quarter this year), Night Safari and Singapore Zoo. Some of these parks are home to endangered animals like Orangutan, Red Panda and Clouded Leopard!

This book introduces the attractions and layout of the Night Safari, the world's first nocturnal zoo located in Mandai.

Parks

Parks are an integral part of Singapore’s landscape and greening journey. The history of parks and greening in Singapore can be traced to 1822 when the first botanical garden was set up on Government Hill (now known as Fort Canning Hill). However, it was not until the late 1960s that the creation of green spaces was firmly placed on the official agenda and a long-term vision was put forth to transform Singapore into a garden city. Apart from the large-scale planting of roadside trees and shrubs, parks were created all over the island from the 1970s. Today, Singapore is home to some 400 parks that provide much-needed green space for people to relax, play, and enjoy the outdoors.

Did you know... Therapeutic gardens are outdoor gardens designed to promote the restorative benefits of nature. The first therapeutic garden in Singapore was launched at HortPark in 2016. Ample shade, wind chimes, and water features help make the garden a relaxing place for visitors.

Chinese Garden (Yu Hwa Yuan)

The Chinese Garden in Jurong was built in 1975 to provide social and recreational amenities for the then rapidly developing Jurong industrial town. Designed by Yu Yuen Chen, a Taiwanese expert on Chinese gardens, the garden is modelled on the northern Chinese imperial style of architecture during the Song dynasty (960–1279 CE) and the Summer Palace in Beijing.

Gardens by the Bay

Occupying some 101 hectares along the Marina Bay waterfront, Gardens by the Bay is Singapore’s premier horticultural attraction. It was conceptualised in 2005 as part of the plan to develop Singapore’s reputation as a “City in a Garden” with world-class green spaces that enhance the quality of life and distinguish Singapore as a global city.

Amusement and Theme Parks

Built in 1937, Haw Par Villa was a large garden filled with sculptures depicting moral lessons found in Chinese folklore. Though built decades ago, it was characterised by leisure and entertainment facilities that revolve a common theme or subject like most modern theme parks today.

The success of Disneyland in the post-war years, coupled with rising affluence in our post-independence years, prompted a growth in the amusement and theme park industry in Singapore. There were at least nine theme parks operating in Singapore in the 1990s, though many of these theme parks would eventually close due to low visitor numbers. However, Singapore’s theme park industry got a boost in 2011 with the opening of Universal Studios Singapore, the first Universal studios theme park in Southeast Asia.

Did you know... Plans for a Universal Studios theme park in the Jurong Lake area were first pitched in the 1990s – almost a decade before Universal Studios Singapore opened at Sentosa island in 2011.

Haw Par Villa (Tiger Balm Gardens) by Lim, Irene

Haw Par Villa is an oriental-style theme park located along Pasir Panjang Road. The park was commissioned in 1937 by businessman Aw Boon Haw, as part of the residential estate he was building for his younger brother, Aw Boon Par. Though located on private property, the garden was opened to the public. The park is known for its statues depicting scenes from Chinese folklore.

Science Centre Singapore by Lim, Tin Seng

The Singapore Science Centre opened to the public on 10 December 1977. It aimed to promote interest and learning in science and technology to students and the public. This objective came at a time when Singapore was industrialising rapidly, and it was paramount to develop Singapore’s industrial and technological skills.

Tang Dynasty Village

This ephemera folder contains brochures on the Tang Dynasty City, a historical and cultural theme park based on the Tang Dynasty. They include a pre-opening promotional brochure, a park guide, a brochure on discounted admission rates, and a promotional brochure for the Ghost Mansion attraction in the park. The park guide brochure provides a snapshot of the theme park, which no longer exists. The guide includes a map of the park and a list of sites and attractions that can be found within.

Universal City Singapore

This publication contains the concept plan and business plan for a Universal Studios theme park in Jurong Lake Site in Singapore. The concept plan includes proposals for the different zones, rides, and attractions in the theme park.

The research was completed in 1997 and was funded by National University of Singapore and Singapore Tourism Board to support tourism research.

Performing Arts Venues

Performing arts venues in Singapore are not only entertainment hubs, but they also serve as landmarks that trace the development of the performing arts here. From the grand Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall to the state-of-the-art Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and the once-glamourous The Majestic, these venues have witnessed Singapore's transformation into a cosmopolitan city-state. Collectively, they have hosted an array of performances, from classical music concerts to theatre productions and Cantonese operas.

Did you know... Esplanade’s Concert Hall, which was designed by the acclaimed acoustician Russell Johnson, possesses one of the best acoustics among concert halls worldwide.

Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall by Tan, Bonny

Gazetted as a national monument in 1992, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall is Singapore’s oldest performing arts venue. It comprises two blocks of buildings – one constructed in 1862 and the other in 1905 – joined by a clock tower. Many performing arts events including musical and stage performances have been held here. In 2014, it was reopened to the public after undergoing a four-year restoration.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay by Faizah Zakaria

The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is an arts centre which features a 1,600-seat concert hall, a 2,000-seat theatre and other smaller performing arts venues. The idea for a performing arts centre was first mooted in 1975 by then Minister of Culture, Ong Teng Cheong. After much deliberation and discussion among many stakeholders, the plans for the centre was unveiled in 1994. The centre was officially opened in 2002 by former President S. R. Nathan.

The Majestic

Built by businessman and philanthropist Eu Tong Sen in 1927, the Majestic was once a Cantonese opera house. It was later used to screen films. Initially named the Tien Yien Moh Toi Theatre, it was renamed a couple more times before being called the Majestic Theatre after the Second World War. It assumed its current name in 2003.
